In April, as USD/JPY moved through the 160 area, Katayama warned that Japan was nearing the point for “decisive action” on the falling yen. She also warned market participants to keep their phones close during Golden Week.That was not just background noise. USD/JPY subsequently fell sharply, with the yen strengthening by roughly 2% on a close-to-close basis.This matters for corporates because intervention risk does not move in a straight line. It tends to appear suddenly, around key levels, after repeated official warnings, and often when liquidity is poor. That can create large overnight moves in hedge valuations, budget rates, and unhedged payables or receivables.Katayama has been relatively quiet since the April episode, but in the last 24 hours she has reaffirmed that Japan will take appropriate action on currencies as needed. She also referenced U.S.-Japan coordination and the possibility of “decisive steps.”That should get the attention of any finance team with JPY exposure.USD/JPY had already made new closing highs earlier in June, around the 8th, without immediate intervention. But the latest move is different. The yen is weakening again while U.S. rates further out the curve are not providing the same clear justification. A stronger dollar can quickly affect import costs, overseas revenues, balance-sheet translation, covenant ratios, hedge effectiveness, and budget rates.In the current type of regime, the dollar can rise for a more constructive reason: US growth is outperforming, and US real yields are rising because the US economy is proving more resilient than others.That is the “US exceptionalism” version of dollar strength.Higher real yields mean global investors are paid more, after inflation, to hold US assets. Lower breakevens mean the market is not simply pricing an inflation scare. The signal is cleaner: stronger real returns, contained inflation expectations, and a Fed with less reason to rush into easing.For companies with USD exposure, this matters because the dollar can strengthen even without a crisis.The two regimes can also overlap. If higher US real rates eventually tighten global financial conditions enough to hurt risk appetite, the dollar can receive a second tailwind: the safe-haven bid.So the sequence can be: USD rises because US real returns improve. USD rises further if global risk appetite deteriorates.FX risk can move quickly from “manageable” to “material”.High-beta EM FX USD/ZAR, USD/BRL, USD/COP, USD/CLP, USD/HUF and USD/PLN can move sharply higher as US real yields rise and investors cut EM exposure.Carry favourites USD/MXN is important. Mexico may have strong fundamentals, but crowded carry trades can unwind when US real yields rise.Commodity and China-sensitive FX AUD/USD and NZD/USD usually struggle. They are liquid expressions of global growth, China demand, and risk appetite.Low-growth G10 FX EUR/USD tends to weaken when US growth and real-rate differentials move in favour of the dollar. GBP/USD and USD/SEK often follow the same logic.JPY and CHF are more nuanced. Sterling does not.The first reason is growth momentum.The US continues to outperform, supported by indicators such as the Weekly Economic Index and broader activity measures. The UK growth picture is positive, but considerably less compelling.The second reason is rates and inflation. Both currencies receive support from higher rates, but the US scores materially better. The Dollar benefits from a stronger inflation and pricing backdrop, while Sterling's support from rates isn't large enough to offset weakness elsewhere.The third and perhaps most important structural difference is the external balance.&nbsp; The UK scores poorly across: ❌ Goods imports ❌ Total imports ❌ Goods trade balance ❌ Non-EU goods trade balance ❌ Overall balance of tradeThese factors create the largest gap between USD and GBP in the model. By contrast, the US external position is modestly positive, helped by stronger export dynamics.The fourth major divergence is sentiment.The US receives a strong positive contribution from consumer and business sentiment indicators. The UK is being dragged down by: 📉 Services PMI 📉 Consumer confidence 📉 Business confidence 📉 Composite PMI The result is a significant sentiment advantage for the Dollar.Even the labour market favours the US.American labour indicators remain supportive overall, while UK labour signals have turned negative.To be fair, Sterling isn't without positives. ✅ Rates and inflation ✅ Credit and money indicators ✅ Commodity exposure All provide support.The problem is that these positives are overwhelmed by: ❌ Slower growth momentum ❌ Weak external balances ❌ Soft sentiment ❌ Deteriorating labour indicatorsThe takeaway?Currencies are rarely driven by a single factor. Sterling has some attractive characteristics, but the Dollar currently has support across more of the macro landscape. But perhaps rates are no longer the dominant variable. China, still possesses extraordinary manufacturing scale, world-class infrastructure, dominance in EVs, batteries and parts of green technology, and the ability to mobilise capital quickly when policymakers choose to act. But the economy is also navigating the aftermath of a major property and credit cycle, weaker demographics, and softer private-sector confidence. Europe, retains major strengths in high-end manufacturing, luxury goods, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, industrial engineering and the energy transition. Germany’s industrial base, French luxury and aerospace leadership, and Nordic innovation ecosystems remain globally competitive. But Europe also faces tighter fiscal constraints, fragmented capital markets, higher energy costs and less hyperscaler dominance in AI infrastructure. The contrast is becoming difficult to ignore and the valuation gap has eased over the past 12 months. The US is increasingly acting like the only major economy capable of simultaneously generating:<ul><li>deep capital markets,</li><li>sovereign-scale private investment,</li><li>fiscal expansion,</li><li>technological leadership,</li><li>energy abundance,</li><li>and global reserve currency demand.Regulation Change </li></ul>That starts to look a lot like US exceptionalism again. The big question I need to answer is will we move back toward the middle of the Dollar Smile. The fact that the USD has not been weakening significantly when oil prices fell suggests the answer could be we will.

US exceptionalism.......is the USD going to lift again???

However from an FX perspective, the comparison is becoming harder to ignore.For years, the dominant macro narrative around Japan has rested on one reassuring fact:“Japan owns its own debt.”Only around 10–12% of Japanese government debt is foreign-owned versus much higher external ownership across other developed bond markets.That statistic has been treated as structural immunity.But markets trade flows, not percentages.Because Japan’s debt pile is so enormous, foreign investors still own roughly $1–1.2 trillion of JGBs — broadly comparable in absolute size to foreign ownership of the UK gilt market.&nbsp;solid counterpoint is a meaningful share of foreign JGB ownership is probably “sticky” capital: &nbsp;• reserve managers &nbsp;• central banks &nbsp;• passive bond index allocators &nbsp;• benchmark-constrained real money investorsThose investors are not typically prone to sudden liquidation.But I still think the market underestimates the significance of the absolute size of the foreign position embedded inside Japan.Especially because the character of the JGB market appears to be changing. For decades Japan benefited from: &nbsp;• persistent current-account surpluses &nbsp;• enormous domestic savings &nbsp;• captive institutional buyers &nbsp;• and a BOJ willing to suppress volatility aggressivelyThat architecture allowed Japan to sustain debt near 230% of GDP without suffering the type of funding stress associated with externally dependent economies.JGB market behaviour has become increasingly asymmetric.When global disinflationary conditions emerge, Japanese yields barely rally. But when global yields rise or inflation pressures reappear, JGB yields react much more aggressively.That asymmetry matters.The yen has already undergone a prolonged stealth devaluation on a real effective basis despite: &nbsp;• a persistent current-account surplus &nbsp;• and one of the world’s largest positive NIIPsThat is unusual.It strongly suggests the market has already embedded a meaningful fiscal and monetary risk premium into JPY over time.Is JPY already mostly priced?Or is the market still underestimating what happens if: &nbsp;• BOJ control weakens further &nbsp;• duration volatility rises structurally &nbsp;• and the marginal buyer of JGBs becomes more price-sensitive?My own view is that the eventual adjustment mechanism probably involves: &nbsp;• higher domestic yields &nbsp;• a weaker yen initially &nbsp;• and only later meaningful repatriation flows&nbsp;The stress likely comes first. &nbsp;The stabilisation mechanism comes later.The vulnerability may not resemble a classic UK-style balance-of-payments crisis. New JPY intervention.... worth betting against?

One shows USD/INR grinding materially above its long-term trend structure.The other overlays Brent crude and USD/INR against the sequence of Trump/Iran/Hormuz headlines.The relationship isn’t perfectly linear, but the directional linkage is hard to ignore:oil spikes → INR pressure, geopolitical escalation → higher USD/INR, crowded panic positioning → richer upside skew.That’s where the asymmetry begins appearing.At elevated spot levels, markets may be simultaneously underestimating:* RBI resistance to disorderly INR weakness * Trump’s incentive to avoid uncontrolled oil spikes * The possibility that US rate expectations fall if markets begin seeing a sustainable resolution pathThat combination creates a potentially attractive short-dated options setup. Rather than fading spot outright, I think the cleaner expression is: ➡️ Buy a short-dated USD/INR put spread ➡️ Finance it by selling a further OTM call spreadWhy this structure makes sense:* upside skew becomes rich during oil panic, * carry works in your favour, * the call spread can often be sold surprisingly far away, and your downside is clearly defined.Importantly, timing is everything here.
